Southstar
Coastal cruising vessel
The fourth Southstar37, launched by Salthouse Boatbuilders in Auckland at the end of 2010, is the latest in a pedigree of classically inspired powerboats borne of a desire to get away from overcomplicated details and enjoy the pleasures of boating and the outdoors.
"New designs can be over complicated that owners spend their time worrying about unnecessary details," says Greg Salthouse of Salthouse Boatbuilders. "With the Southstar37 we have focused on the fundamentals of inspirational yet practical onboard living."
The Southstar37s are a timeless but eye-catching design, combining high-tech composite construction with varnished timber and classic lines. They offer excellent interior volume that gives spacious living for couples and their guests, or for a family, and a layout that encourages easy, relaxed socializing, with flexible spaces, and excellent visibility.
The underwater shape makes for comfortable and safe passage making at speeds of up to 30 knots, within a fully enclosed wheelhouse, and even in adverse conditions.
The fourth in the line, launched at the end of 2010, is the first to be equipped with a powerful 350hp V8 Yamaha outboard. While popular in Europe, Australia and North America, outboard driven boats of this size are still relatively uncommon in New Zealand, but allow for cost savings in construction of around 20%, better performance through the water, and increase the available interior volume.
Salthouse Boatbuilders are understandably proud of their creation. Boats have been sold to New Zealand and European owners, including former Rolex World Yachtsman of the year, Mike Sanderson, and the fourth boat, named Southstar, is now available for purchase for NZ$580,000, and bespoke versions can be built.
